Japan had been calling my name for years. I put the call out to a few friends, and they answered. KONICHI-WHATS UP!!! I told them to pack their bags, and trusted Nomad and Quill to do the rest. From the streets of Tokyo to the temples of Kyoto to the untouched powder of Hokkaido, this trip was the perfect blend of high-energy exploration and peaceful retreat.

Tokyo’s Electric Energy
Landing in Tokyo felt like stepping into the future. From the thoughtful flight selection, and expedited arrival services, I knew we were set up for success. Driving into the city you could feel the energy radiating through the skyscrapers, bustling streets, and flashing billboards. We checked into the sleek Tokyo Edition, the staff had a level of hospitality that was unparalleled. The hotel was a modern oasis blending minimalism with traditional aesthetics and a very chic cool vibe.. After dropping our bags, we dove headfirst into the city’s scene.
Shibuya & Shinjuku: The City That Never Sleeps
No Tokyo experience is complete without braving the iconic Shibuya Crossing. Amid the chaos of moving bodies and neon signs, I felt like I was in a cyberpunk movie. From there, we wandered into Golden Gai, a labyrinth of tiny bars in Shinjuku, each with its own personality and intimate atmosphere. Later, we explored Japanese listening bars, known for their strict no-talking policies—an experience I highly recommend.

A Culinary Wonderland
Tokyo is a dream for food lovers. In just a few days, we ate and drank our way through the city, and I am still dreaming about some of the flavors. From a standing sushi bar in Tsukiji Fish market to a hidden ramen joint in a back alley of Setagaya, every bite was next-level 10/10. The highlight? An omakase dinner at Ishikawa, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Kagurazaka. Each dish was a masterpiece, blending delicate flavors with seasonal ingredients, leaving me in awe of Japan’s culinary artistry.

Harajuku & Akihabara
Harajuku’s Takeshita Street was a sensory overload—vibrant fashion, wild sweets, and youth culture in full force. Just a few train stops away, Akihabara was a different spectacle—an anime and gaming mecca. I battled locals in rhythm games and explored VR experiences that felt straight out of the future.
Kyoto: A Step Back in Time
After Tokyo’s whirlwind, Kyoto was a welcome shift. The city is the heart of traditional Japan, where history and nature intertwine. We checked into Hoshinoya Kyoto, a luxury ryokan along the Hozu River, offering an escape into tranquility.

Fushimi Inari & Arashiyama’s Magic
First stop was Fushimi Inari Shrine, where thousands of vermillion torii gates formed a hypnotic tunnel up the sacred mountain. The early morning quiet made it surreal. Later, I took a boat ride through Arashiyama, where bamboo groves swayed in the wind, creating a meditative atmosphere.
Tea Ceremony & Zen Moments
For a deeper cultural dive, we participated in a traditional tea ceremony at a centuries-old tea house. Every movement, from whisking the matcha to serving the tea, felt intentional—like a dance in stillness. At Ryoanji Temple, home to Japan’s most famous Zen rock garden, time seemed to slow completely.
Gion & The Geisha Experience
As the sun set, I wandered the cobblestone streets of Gion, Kyoto’s historic geisha district. The wooden houses, lantern-lit alleyways, and glimpses of kimono-clad geisha felt like stepping back in time. We ended the night with a multi-course meal paired with sake, soaking in Kyoto’s timeless charm.
Hokkaido: Chasing Deep Powder
After being immersed in Japan’s cities, we were ready to get into the woods. After all Hokkaido is legendary for Japow—some of the lightest, driest powder snow on Earth. I flew into Sapporo and made my way to Niseko, the gateway to Japan’s best backcountry snowboarding.
For the ultimate deep powder experience, we ventured to Chisenupuri, a hidden gem with legendary terrain and expert crew of guides. A snowcat whisked us straight up the hill granting us access to pristine slopes untouched by any humans. Waist-deep powder all around me, carving through silver birch forests, nonstop free refills, it felt like I was floating. Imagine that for four days straight?!

Each day, as the sun set over Mt. Yotei, I realized this was more than just a trip—it was a life changing experience. After long days of chasing powder, nothing compared to soaking in a steaming onsen, surrounded by snow-draped landscapes. This is a Japanese tradition I could get used to. Niseko’s onsens were pure tranquility—natural hot springs, no fuss, just relaxation and cold, cheap Sapporo beer.
At night, Niseko pulsed with energy. We wandered through snow-stacked streets, stopping at lively izakayas packed with fellow riders, swapping stories over sake and steaming bowls of ramen. The legendary Ice Bar was the perfect stop—an entire bar sculpted from ice, glowing with ethereal blue light. Sipping a perfectly aged Japanese whiskey in this frozen wonderland was the ultimate après-ski experience.
My mind was officially blown. This place is truly remarkable. A bucket list trip indeed.
As I sat on the plane, watching Japan’s lights fade into the distance, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. This journey was more than a trip—it was a collision of worlds, blending the hyper-modern with the ancient, the fast-paced with the serene, the heart-pounding with the meditative.
From Tokyo’s neon dreams to Kyoto’s timeless beauty and Hokkaido’s adrenaline rush, Japan had shifted my perspective. Each place had its own rhythm, its own way of making me feel alive.
But this wasn’t sayonara—see you later. If you’re dreaming of a place that will challenge, inspire, and leave you breathless, book that ticket. Pack your bags. Chase the adventure. Lose yourself in everything that makes Japan unforgettable.
